WALKING WORKS NEWS

Kendal great place to start English Walk to Work campaign

Gordon Swindlehurst, host of the BBC Radio Cumbria lunchtime show, thinks sitting in a car is mad if walking to work is an option.
And he thinks Kendal is the perfect place to start a Walk to Work campaign.Gordon interviewed Living Street's Paul Holdsworth yesterday (31 January) about our pilot project with the North Glamorgan NHS Trust."It was a great opportunity to encourage Cumbrians to consider walking to work, as well as to school or the shops," said Paul. "Gordon was really keen, and agreed that Kendal would be an ideal candidate for an English version of the 'Walking Works Wales' scheme"."Kendal is about to get improvements to its main shopping street, including new pavements, seats and trees. It would be a perfect time to celebrate in-town walking, and tell everyone that walking is not just for the fells," Paul continued.Paul is advocating better street crossings, wider pavements and more seats to reward those who walk in Kendal. "And a Walking Festival, so we can remind ourselves that Kendal is already a great place to walk." Callers from Carlisle and Penrith phoned in to support the initiative, saying walking was easy and quick, and better than spending time searching for a parking space.
